What a beautiful family we come from. The family of God class born into the kingdom of light, love, and peace. We are a holy people, a royal priesthood, a peculiar nation. God's special breeds. But just because a Christian comes from a special family does not equal automatic anointing to avoid sexual temptation. 

  To a person whose conscience is seared, sex is not a temptation. Fornication or adultery does not matter. But for us, overcoming the temptation of sexual immorality is paramount because God takes fornication very seriously.   In case you are asking how can a Christian resist sexual immorality easily in this world of nudity, then this post is for you.  

HOW TO AVOID SEXUAL TEMPTATION AS A CHRISTIAN

The society we live in is becoming more unfavorable to the average Christian. With the way young girls flock our streets naked couple with how TV stations and social media constantly bombard us with sex suggesting information, it becomes even more difficult to overcome sexual temptations as Christians.   However, there are smarter ways to end the grips that sex has on us.  

1.    DON'T COURT FOR LONG

Tempted Christians who commit fornication do because they stay longer than expected in a relationship. For any  Christian to overcome sexual temptation, he or she must not have a relationship the way the world does.   

While we can't deny that a relationship is good, we can't also deny that one of its disadvantages is the promotion of our drive or longing for sex.  Unbelievers don't mind hanging in there for long provided they are constantly enjoying premarital sex. But not for the Christian.

2.    FIND ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

  

When someone is drowning in water, the first time he is thrown up is an opportunity to call for help as loud as he can, else, he may not survive.  

 Similarly, when a Christian is tempted sexually, calling for accountability partners should be the first thing to do as quickly as possible to survive. 

  Accountability partners are those you've given the power and right to question your behavior and encourage you until your weakness turns to strength. Pastors, close friends, mother and father, mentors, counselors, or coaches are a good fit for this role. They are people you can trust, preferably those who have gone through what you are going through.   

How does this work? If for instance, you are sexually aroused, you can reach out to one of your partners who can pray with you or invite you over and engage you in something that can refocus your thoughts and help you calm.  

  

3.    DATE SPIRITUALLY MATURE PEOPLE

 

 You can't keep a goat and lion together. In the same way, a born-again Christian has no business being in a relationship with an unbeliever or an unspiritual Christian. When a Christian is tempted to have sex, it could be that he or she is in a relationship with those who tempt them.  

 Think about it, a relationship alone is enough source of temptation. The last thing any Christian desiring to overcome sexual frustrations wants is dating a carnal Christian who will only worsen matters.    

4.    ALWAYS RESIST THE DEVIL

    

Many cases of adultery or any form of sexual immorality have a demonic undertone. Satan is our number one enemy. He is against our holiness because he knows he can't touch holy people unless he infiltrates them. This is why the scripture asks us to resist the devil and he will flee.

  To overcome sexual desire as  Christians, the name of JESUS should never depart out of our mouths. It is both a defensive and offensive weapon.    

5.    CONSTANTLY CONNECT TO THE GRACE

 

 This is where many believers miss it. They want to fight their sexual urge by just setting boundaries and making covenant determination not to commit fornication again.  This is what Paul calls Self-righteousness in Romans10:1-4.  

 Though these things are good, they are not enough. Your boundaries, determination, and resolutions need empowerment by God's Grace.  

 How do you connect to this Grace? By practicing Hebrews12:1-2. Verse 1 talks about "the sin" while verse 2 talks about how to overcome "the sin," which is by looking unto Jesus.  

 To overcome sexual temptation as children of God, we must always acknowledge that Jesus is our helper, source of strength, and savior. We must plea His blood continuously. Peradventure we fall, we should ask for His forgiveness and grace to overcome next time(Hebrews4:15-16).

The Bible asks us to be holy even as our Father, God, is Holy. But how then can we be holy? God cannot ask you and me to do what He has not given us help to do. Look at God's word in 1Corinthians10:13. 

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

One reason you must avoid sexual temptation as a Christian is so you can escape committing sexual immorality.  Immorality is the result of heeded temptations. 

Sexual immorality is simply the act of engaging in sex and its activities outside the premise of marriage. It can also be defined as being inhuman with sex.  Any sex or sexual activities done beyond the boundaries God has set is immoral.  

 Examples of Sexual Immorality

Some common examples of sexual immorality are fornication, adultery, Gay, lesbianism, bestiality, or sex between relatives(incest).  

Causes of Sexual Immorality

  

To be tempted sexually is not without a cause. There is no sexually tempted Christian who can deny this fact. It is only after we yield to these temptations that sexual immorality is committed. 

Some of the major causes of sexual immorality are:  

• Lust: seeing and hearing sex-related contents
• Lack of self-control: inability to control our sexual drives when we are tempted.
• Pornography: intentionally watching pornography or adult magazine.
• Self-will: Though we have self-control and there is no lust, but we just decide to have sex even when we can easily resist it.
• Peer pressure: Making immoral friends will only make us immoral in return.

As a Christian, if you cannot conquer the controlling power of sexual temptation, you may face grave consequences. The temptation of physical pleasure is not one to treat with careless abandon. The side effects are enormous. 

Many Christian think that every negative thing that happens to them is all God's making. That's not true. Many of them are our making and it is because we fail to yield to God's instructions. 

It is not God's fault when we see the negative results of our sexual sins. He already told us that all the temptations we face are common to man. If people have gone through them and succeeded means anybody can. It is our lack of determination and our enjoyment of that sin that keep us bound. 

The outcomes of sexual immorality are too heavy. This is why we must put in enough energy to ensure we don't commit any kind of immorality.
