WHAT ARE GOOD BIBLE VERSES ON ADDICTION RECOVERY?
One common question people ask is, " what is a good bible verse on addiction recovery?"
It is one thing to have an addiction issue, it is another thing to
locate the right bible pages that talk about your particular area of
addiction. If you can find them, and meditate on them believing the
tremendous power available in them, you are certain to win your fight
against addiction.
With this in mind, what can we say then is a good bible verse about addiction?
It is one that relates and addresses the exact challenge you are facing per time. Take, for instance, if a farmer tries to cut down a tree with a hoe,
there's certainly nothing much he can accomplish. But when he uses the right
equipment, in no time, he'll bring the whole tree down. It's all about
tailoring the right tool and approach.
Similarly, if we must be successful in dealing with an addiction
problem, the first thing to do is try and find the best bible verse for
that specific addiction issue so we can meditate and pray with them daily.

kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor

will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Galatians 5:19-21
“So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be

putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a

of hell.”

SCRIPTURES ON GAMBLING ADDICTION
Gambling is a severe type of addiction in the 21st century. Everyone wants to survive by all means, considering the adverse economic stance which has caused inflation. This is why addiction to gambling is so critical that it demands all the solution one can lay hands on. What other solution is befitting if not God's word?
Before we delve into some scriptures, let's see what the bible has to
say about gambling.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT GAMBLING ADDICTION
Gambling is one thing that many people have different opinions about. Some people think it's ok to bet, others particularly Christians strongly believe it is a sin against God. Whatever be the perspectives people have formed about the subject of gambling, it must be for a reason.
I don't intend to debate people's opinions. After all, I'm not
writing for everybody. I write for those who are ready to believe what God
has to say.
Let me start by defining what gambling is.
Gambling also called betting or staking is an adventure of risk that a
person is willing to stake something of value for a greater gain based on
uncertainty, prediction, and calculations.
While this may sound like a good business deal, it has many unfathomable
downsides.
The bible may not have the exact word
" gambling addiction" in it, but it sure has some
bible pages that address man's disposition towards money. It makes sense
because Money is a good fit we can relate with gambling addiction seeing
that every betting endeavor is either geared towards winning a cash prize or
exchanging something of value for another.
While the bible may not be explicit about God's stand on
gambling, there are a few scriptural references that implied it. Let's check
them out.
Matthew 6 [24]“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.I will explain this chapter in the following heading before i finally show you some key addiction bible verses.
IS GAMBLING A SIN IN THE BIBLE?
Let’s use Matthew 6:24 to answer this question and explain even further God's stance on gambling. No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24Matthew6:24 is just God's thought on any kind of addiction. I could give a dozen insights as to why gambling or betting is not God's will.
First, people often tend to idolize money-related adventures.
And This is what mainly gives rise to gambling addiction. People value and
love money so much so that, they're willing to steal from others or sell
their valuables just to gamble if Peradventure they stand a chance to win
big.
Second, gambling can keep one from embracing God's purpose for life.
That is, it can stifle one's potential and promote one's laziness.
Wonder why youths are lazier in this generation than in any other
generation that has ever existed? It is due to the
get-rich-quick-scheme which includes gambling. Instead of working hard
to earn money in an honorable way, they prefer shortcuts.
Third, when one is addicted to gambling, a lot can go wrong.
For example, addiction to gambling can be harmful to one's psychological and
physical health. Moreover, people who live with this type of addiction may
experience depression, distress, migraine, and other problems related to
anxiety from fear of uncertainty.
With all these said, you can see for yourself that apparently,
gambling is sinful. God cannot approve of something that ruins people’s
life.
Check out a few other bible references that give us a clue about
God's thoughts on gambling:
1 Timothy 6
"[10]For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some
people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced
themselves with many sorrows."
Proverbs 13
"[11]Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears;
wealth from hard work grows over time."
1 Timothy 6:9-10
"[9]But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by
many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.

craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with
many sorrows."
Ecclesiastes 5
"[10]Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think
that wealth brings true happiness!"
Luke 12
"[15]Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not

Now that we have come to terms with the dangers of addiction to

addiction:

they all became drowsy and slept."
BIBLE VERSES ABOUT FOOD ADDICTION
Though food addiction is not common, it is also worthy of attention, especially for believers. As a Christian, I can confidently say that one thing that keeps believers from accessing some vital spiritual dimensions is FOOD. Hence, the need to control it.
Before accessing a few scriptural references relating, I want to
answer a some common questions people ask before going ahead to show you
some bible verses about food addiction.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT FOOD ADDICTION: WHAT DOES GOD SAY ABOUT FOOD?
Though I know about food addiction, I personally did not know anyone who was addicted until I started noticing how my little cousin started showing some signs of food addiction. If I could give a description of how people who are food addicts behave, I would say that, they have a high affinity for anything edible. Sometimes, I wonder where those large bowls of food go to. It seems to me like their stomachs have larger compartments than that of voracious wild animals.
More profoundly, I noticed that what makes one a food addict is not
necessarily in the quantity of food engulfed. Food addicts may not eat to
the brim, however, they will not rest until they have a feel of what every
food tastes like in smaller proportions.
Typical food addicts are easy to spot. All you have to do is
seat a while with them in an open spot where there are different food
vendors. You would realize that most of the time, they do nothing else but place orders. They want to take everything:
different brands of wine, ice cream, juice, snacks, foods, name it.
While eating well is good, eating in excess is unhealthy. A lot can
go wrong as a result. For example, Obesity, dead, laziness, and hindered
breath are some dangers associated with food addiction.
God is against anything that is not in our best interest, hence He
provides us with bible verses about addiction.
Solomon And Paul's Advice On Food Addiction
While there are many bible verses about food addiction, proverb 23:2
summarise it all. Check out what it says:
“and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite.”
Of cause, this is not a literal statement. Who wants to die because
he is given to appetite? It is rather a figurative implication that anyone
who gratifies excessively is already dead. This truth is re-echoed by
Paul in 1Timothy 4:8,
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto
all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is
o come.”
What this means is that being more spiritually-minded benefits more than
being physical. Unfortunately, foods tend to draw us to be more
physically conscious. It empowers the flesh more than anything else.
On the other hand, fasting hinders the flesh and boosts the spirit.
This is the reason we are admonished to fast occasionally.
WHAT ARE SOME BIBLE VERSES ABOUT FOOD?
Some bible verse that talks about food are:
1 Corinthians 10:31
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of
God
Hebrews 13:9
Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the
heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited
those devoted to them.
Proverbs 23:2
And put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite.
1 Corinthians 6:13
Food for the stomach and the stomach for food"--but God will destroy them
both.
Below are some good bible verses about addiction to help one recover from
excessive longing for food:
Psalm 127:2-1
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat. For he
grants sleep to those he loves. Unless the Lord builds the house, the
builders labor in vain.
Proverbs 13:25
“The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the
wicked is in need.”
Romans 7:19-20
For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this
I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who
do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
Proverbs 23:1-3
“When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is before
you, And put a knife to your throat if you are a man of great appetite. Do
not desire his delicacies, for it is deceptive food.”
1 Corinthians 10:31
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of
God.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made
perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my
weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. For when I am weak, then
I am strong.
Proverbs 25:16
“Have you found honey? Eat only what you need, that you not have it in
excess and vomit it.”
1 Corinthians 6:12
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.
“I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by
anything.
Galatians 5:22-24
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there
is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires.
BIBLE VERSES FOR ALCOHOL ADDICTION
One common substance abuse is alcohol. This ostensibly results from the fact that almost all alcoholic drinks in the market are rated 18. So a parent gives a teenage child some pocket money, he invests it in alcohol. Initially, it begins with a bottle, it then graduates into two and then five by the end of the week.
In case you find yourself doing this, these are my best bible verses
for alcoholic addiction.
Titus 1:7-8
“For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed,
not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid
gain, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout,
self-controlled.”
Isaiah 5:22

Genesis 19:30-35

old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of
the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him
that we may preserve our family through our father.” So they made their
father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her
father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. On the
following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night
with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and
lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.” So they
made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay
with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose."

rendering judgment."
Romans 13:13

God."
EXAMPLES OF ADDICTION IN THE BIBLE
Were there any addicts in the bible? What did Jesus say about addiction? Let's find out.
First, there are addicts in the bible. Jesus himself set one free.
There are scriptures on Christ helping with addictions.
In John 8:3, a certain adulterous woman was brought before
Jesus to see the judgment he would pass.
Adultery was a sever offense back then that is punishable by death yet she
couldn't stay off it. The woman was clearly an example of a sex addict even if the bible didn't state it explicitly.
Why did I say this? Addiction is not something that begins spontaneously.
For an act to be qualified as addiction, it must have been indulged in for a
very long time that it formed a habit over the years that's pretty hard to
deal with.
When this woman was brought to Jesus, you could see the remorse she
felt. She knew it wasn't right to commit adultery. I believe that sexual
addiction was one of her struggles for years but she couldn't just stop it
by her own willpower even though she wanted to, not until Jesus came. In
other words, Jesus was her living bible verse.
Another instance of addiction in the bible is food addiction. The
children of Israel showed how addicted they were by how they were unsatisfied with the manna God provided them. They were so engrossed with eating that
they chose to go back to Egypt as slaves if that was the criterion they
needed to enjoy the sumptuous meals in Egypt.
IS THERE A SPIRIT OF ADDICTION IN THE BIBLE?
There is a spirit behind every evil just as the Spirit of God is behind every good. However, the bible didn't particularly point out a specific spirit responsible for a particular addiction.
There are words the bible uses as pointers to addiction. If
you study God's word, you will always come across words like
stronghold, bondage, and yoke. Is this not what addiction
does to people? It bonds, holds and yokes people to a particular habit only
God can solve. This is why everyone needs bible verses on
addiction. Any spirit that can keep people bonded and yoked to a habit is a spirit of
addiction.
BIBLICAL APPROACH TO ADDICTIONS
Virtually everybody is addicted. If you are not addicted to what is good, you are addicted to what is bad and it doesn't matter who you are; Pastors, professors, workers, students, old people, or youngsters. Everyone is suffering or has once suffered an addiction. This is why everybody, not just those who are severely addicted needs a few bible verses about addiction.
In Philippians 4:5, God admonishes us as believers
that our moderation should be known by all men. In other words, Christians
should conduct themselves and control their involvement with things with
moderation. I believe this is because, any time this boundary called
moderation is breached, addiction is born.
To deal with addiction according to the bible, one must be;
- Committed: Totally resolve to fight addiction with all sense of seriousness. The quality of one's decision will determine the level of success or failure. The following points are what you will commit to doing after you have totally resolved in your mind.
- Thought-killing Conscious: Many areas of addiction emerge from unhealthy thoughts and imagination. If one can flood his or her thoughts with only positive things, the tendency to think negatively will be mitigated greatly. Satan brings negative thoughts to everybody. The difference between those who execute these thoughts and those who don't is discipline. Those who ignore such thoughts by finding more useful things to indulge in are those who do not allow the thought to germinate in the soil of their minds.
- Distanced From Pointers To Negative Thoughts: If you must succeed in this journey of combating addiction, you must keep off from everything that points to negative thoughts. You must keep off from bad companies, control what you see and mind where you go. This decision may not be convenient, but the results are worth it.
- Pray, Fast, and Meditate: Prayer and fasting disarm the flesh and empowers your spirit to take control of your thoughts, decisions, and actions. On the other hand, meditating on some of these scriptural references that talk about addiction commits God to intervene in your matter and help you conquer.
COMBINED EFFORT: DIVINITY AND HUMANITY
While you carry out the physical assignments of controlling what the
eyes see and what the ears hear, minding the places you go, putting off bad
friends, and controlling negative thoughts, God carries out the spiritual
assignments of transforming you from within as you keep studying and
mediating His words.
Solving addiction problems can therefore be viewed as an intervention of
both humanity and divinity.
CONCLUSION
For those who are Christians, these bible verses about addiction are
all you need to overcome the challenges of drug, intoxication, substance abuse, and every other addictive
behavior.
